Victorian Long Sterling & 9kt Niello Chain with Slide
Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal.
This wonderful Niello chain is a fine example of the Niello art. Extra long in length, this chain is from the Victorian (ca1880) era. Ornately decorated, 85 open twisted silver enamel links alternate with complimenting twisted 9kt rose gold links. Each twisted Niello link is engraved and enameled all around in a traditional striped Niello motif. The clasp of the chain is the original Niello watch swivel clasp and 9kt gold spring clasp which makes it easy to double the necklace and to attach a locket or pendant. Also found on the chain is a stunning silver Niello detailed slide which is in the shape of a lotus-like flower. The watch swivel clasp is stamped "900". This fabulous piece would look great worn alone, or with a matching Niello pendant or locket attached.
Measurements: The entire length of the chain measures 58 1/2" long. Each link measures approximately 1/8" wide and 3/8" tall. The slide, which is removable, measures approximately 7/8" long and 1/2" at its widest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the chain is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver or the Niello enameling. The clasp and watch swivel fastens securely and is in good working condition and the slide moves easily along the chain.
