Victorian Sterling 15kt Onyx Garnet & Diamond Bug Locket
A magnificent onyx, garnet, and diamond bug locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This exceptional piece is oval in shape and made of hand carved onyx. At the center of the solid onyx plaque is a fabulous winged bug which is made of 15kt yellow gold and sterling silver. The wings of the bug are portrayed by two deep red garnet stones and two vibrant rubies represents its eyes. The sterling silver body of the bug holds 13 sparkling old Rose Cut diamonds, including one on the head and 3 that peek from beneath the wings. Curved antennae sprout out of the top of the head and 6 gold bent legs peek out from the underside. The back of the locket displays a glass window that opens to reveal a place for a favorite photograph. The entire piece hangs from a complimentary sterling and enamel bail. It's a magnificent piece and would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The locket hangs approximately 2 1/2" long, is 1 1/2" wide and 1/2" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the onyx plaque locket or to the gold setting of the bug. All of the stones within the bug are intact and the sterling frame of the locket opens easily and stays securely closed.
