Tiger claw jewelry became popular during the British colonization of India during the Victorian period. This period was known as the British Raj (Hindi for 'rule'). The pieces were produced to appeal to the British travelers as souvenirs with an Indian flare. This craft is now banned which makes the older pieces very collectible.

This particular set is simply marvelous and extravagant! From the Victorian period (ca1880), the set includes a pair of tiger claw earrings and a complementary necklace. The necklace is made up of a total of 5 double tiger claw links which dangle from an ornate silver gilt chain. Each double claw pendant link has a gold tone cap which is ornately decorated in Etruscan revival wirework. A silver gilt link dangles in the center of the two claws and a scalloped edged encasing is at the tip of each claw. The pendant links graduate in size, with the largest set of claws resting in the center.

The wonderful earrings are made up a complimentary design with again 2 large tiger claws. They are set within a slightly different but equally beautiful and ornate silver gilt gold-tone topper with Etruscan revival wirework throughout. A silver gilt tear drop link dangles in the center of the two claws and scalloped edged encasing is at the tip of each claw. The earrings hang from modern 14kt gold earring leverback.

Measurements: The necklace measures approximately 18 3/4" in length. The tiger claw links range in size with the smallest being 1 1/2" tall by 2 3/8" wide and 3/8" thick and the largest being 1 3/4" tall by 2 5/8" wide and 3/8" thick. The earrings hang approximately 2 1/4" long and are 2 1/4" at the widest point.

Condition: The overall condition of the set is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the gilted silver metal or to the tiger claws. The earring leverbacks and the necklace hook closure are secure and in good working condition.
