Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal.

This wonderful Niello chain is a fine example of the Niello art. From the Victorian (ca1880) era, this ornately decorated chain has 17 twisted sterling enamel links alternating with 16 complimenting twisted 9kt rose gold links. Each twisted Niello link is engraved and enameled all around in a traditional striped Niello motif. The clasp of the chain is the original Niello watch swivel clasp and large Niello spring clasp, which makes it easy to attach a locket or pendant. Although the chain is not marked, it has been tested to be sterling and 9kt gold. This fabulous piece would look great worn alone, or with a matching Niello pendant or locket attached.

Measurements: The entire length of the chain measures 17 1/2" long. Each Niello and rose gold link measure approximately 1/2" wide and slightly less than 1/4" tall. The Niello spring clasp has a diameter of 3/4".

Condition: The overall condition of the chain is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the silver or the Niello enameling and the clasp fastens securely and is in good working condition.
