Victorian Sterling Etched Cross & Watch Chain
A fabulous Victorian (ca1880) book chain with a sterling etched cross! The sterling silver book chain is simple and light and each link is comprised of 2 oval shaped bent rings that fit together like a puzzle. The sterling cross is ornately decorated on the front surface with a lovely etched leaf design. The cross hangs from a large sterling spring ring which opens and makes it easy to change the piece that hangs from the book chain. The chain connects to the spring ring with a sterling watch swivel clasp. On the back of the cross are the English hallmarks"P8W", the letter "i", and a stamped anchor and a lion. There is also an additional marking that I cannot identify on the watch swivel clasp. It is a beautiful example of Victorian artistry and would make a great addition to any collection!
Measurements: The sterling book chain measures approximately 18 1/2" long, a little less than 1/2" wide and a little more than 1/8" thick. The inside of the spring ring has a diameter of 5/8". The cross measures approximately a little less than 1 3/4" long, a little more than 1" wide and 1/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the book chain and the attached spring ring and swivel watch clasp is in good working condition. There is also no apparent damage to the sterling cross.
