Victorian Sterling Silver Floral Locket & Book Chain w/Extender
A fabulous sterling locket and chain from the Victorian (ca1880) era! The gorgeous oval shaped sterling locket is ornately detailed with a fantastic floral and star repousse design. In the center of the piece is a single raised flower with several engraved stems and leaves below it. Surrounding this center is a thick border of sterling circles with star stamped centers and evenly spaced around the outer border of the locket are sterling balls. The locket opens to reveal a glass-covered, black and white photograph of a man in an armed services uniform. At the top is a nice sized fluted bail, which attaches the piece to its stunning Victorian book chain. This complimentary chain is made of several sterling barrel links, each of which carries a lovely floral and star design on its face. Each link consists of 2 barrels, capped on either end by sterling beads. The two ends of the chain come together at a spring clasp ring that attaches to an optional extender. The back of the locket is stamped “S&W” along with 3 other English hallmarks. The locket and chain are truly beautiful example of Victorian artistry. They would make a great addition to any collection!
Measurements: The locket hangs approximately 2 1/4" long, is 1 3/8" wide and slightly more than 1/4" at the thickest point. The book chain measures 17" long, is slightly more than 1/2" wide and is 1/8" thick. The optional extender measures 1 1/2” when attached to its spring clasp.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the silver or to the ornate design. The locket closes easily and stays securely closed. The overall condition of the chain is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the sterling links and the clasp and spring ring fasten securely and are in good working condition.
