Vintage Los Castillo Abalone Shell Starfish Pendant
Los Castillo was a Mexican jewelry company formed by 4 brothers, Don Antonio, Jorge, Miguel and Justo Castillo, in the late 1930's. All were trained in different areas of the silver business and Don Antonio Castillo was an apprentice for William Spratling's Las Delicias workshop in the early 1930's. Los Castillo is known for beautiful craftsmanship and their revival of ancient techniques.
A wonderful Vintage Mexican silver and abalone shell pendant from the 1960’s! This beautiful piece is by Los Castillo and made of sterling silver and portrays a large starfish. Set within the silver setting is 10 pieces of vibrant inlaid abalone shell. The color of the abalone is magnificent, with swirling hues of white, magenta, blue, and green which fluctuates as it catches the light. At the center of the pendant is a star shaped cutout with a solid sterling silver ball resting in the middle. The entire piece hangs from a simple sterling ring, and the back of the star is stamped “LOS CASTILLO TAXO”, “HECHO EN MEXICO”, and the number "12". It is a fabulous piece and would make a great addition to any collection!
Measurements: Measuring from the 5-points, the pendant has an approximate diameter of 3 1/8”, and is slightly more than 1/8” thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting and all of the abalone shell pieces are intact. It looks to me that one of the abalone pieces has been repaired, but this is not noticeable when worn.
