Vintage Ming's Carved Ivory Palm Earring & Bracelet Set
Ming's began producing and selling jewelry in the early 1940's and continued until the close of their business in the1990's. Most commonly produced with hand carved ivory and sterling silver, pieces typically represented animals, nature and warriors native to the Hawaiian islands. Ming's used only the finest African elephant ivory, which at the time was legally purchased and imported, and sterling silver metal.
This beautiful set by Ming's is from the 1950's and is exceptional. It represents a pair of earrings and a matching bracelet that are comprised of vibrant green palm leaves. The ivory has been intricately hand carved and is very detailed. The leaves have a 3-dimensional look with curled tips and cutouts within the center and each is hand dyed/painted a luscious green color. The earrings are represented by a single palm leaf and the bracelet is comprised of 6 slightly smaller leaves. Both the bracelet and the earrings are set in sterling silver. The earrings have the original clip-on backs which are both marked "STERLING" and the bracelet has a secure silver clasp which is also marked "STERLING". Ming's signature is on the back of both earrings as well as 4 of the 6 palm leaf links of the bracelet. Each earring is marked "MING'S HONOLULU". The 4 links of the bracelet each have a single word which make up the phrase "MING'S HONOLULU IVORY". There is another word (most likely a town in Hawaii) on one of the bracelet links, however, it is illegible to me, please see images. Each marking is hand signed and in black ink. It's a fantastic set and would make the perfect addition to any Ming's collection!
Measurements: Each earring measures 1 1/8" at the widest point, 1 3/8" at the tallest point and approximately 1/8" thick. The bracelet measures 7 1/4" long. Each bracelet link is 1" at the widest point, 1 1/8" at the tallest point and approximately 1/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the set is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the ivory or the sterling silver setting. The earring clip-ons are in great working condition and sit securely and comfortably on the ear. The bracelet clasp fastens securely and is in good working condition.
