Toshikane was a Japanese company from Arita, Japan that fabricated porcelain buttons, jewelry, and other ceramic pieces, dating back to as early as the 1940's. Each Toshikane design has a distinctly Japanese look and feel, incorporating elements such as Asian fans, the 7 Lucky Gods, and exotic bird and flower designs into the work. Usually set in silver, the porcelain pieces are intricately hand painted in a variety of vibrant colors. As they are no longer fabricated, Toshikane pieces are now a rare find and are highly collectible.
A fantastic Vintage Toshikane bracelet and earring set from the 1950's! This fabulous set is comprised of a beautiful silver and porcelain seahorse link bracelet and a pair of matching screw back earrings. The seahorses are made of hand painted porcelain on a flat-backed silver setting. Each seahorse is intricately painted in either blue or green, with metallic gold accents painted along the fins and face. The seahorses have an innocent appearance, with large wide eyes, bright colorful bodies and tails curled inwards towards their painted white bellies. The painted porcelain is topped with a satiny finish.
The bracelet is comprised of 8 seahorse links in a row that alternate between blue and green and are connected by short silver chains along the top and bottom. The bracelet fastens together at the back with a silver push clasp, which has a safety chain for extra security. The back of each seahorse is stamped "SILVER," and the back of the clasp is stamped "SILVER", "MADE IN JAPAN" and "TRADEMARK" followed by two Japanese characters. The matching earrings are blue seahorses, which have the original silver screw backs attached to the back. The silver setting on the back of the earrings is stamped with the Japanese hallmarks and the word "JAPAN". Both the earrings and the bracelet come in the original Toshikane box, which is labeled "TOSHIKANE CHINA, TRADE MARK, ART CERAMIC, JAPAN ARITA" along with the Japanese Toshikane characters. An outstanding piece, this gorgeous jewelry set has a fun and attractive look and would make a fantastic addition to any collection!
Measurements: Each seahorse measures slightly less than 1" tall, is 5/8" at the widest point, and approximately 3/16" thick. The bracelet measures 7 1/2" long and would fit an average sized wrist.
Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Aside from normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the porcelain or silver, and the screw backs are both intact and in good working condition. The bracelet's push clasp is secure and in good working condition, and the safety chain is intact.
