Art Deco Faceted Jet & Rock Quartz Crystal Bead Necklace

SKU: 36575

Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There is generally two recognized types: soft and hard Jet. It is believed that the soft Jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of Jet. As a result, the Jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.

A fabulous Jet bead necklace from the late Art Deco (ca1930) era! This stunning piece is comprised of 84 graduating faceted Jet beads which have rich black color. Alternating with the beads are smaller faceted rock quartz crystal spacers and together the black and white colors form an extra long necklace. The beads are strung on black thread and at the back is a screw-in type clasp which is incorporated into the design. It's a fabulous, easy to wear piece that would make a lovely addition to any collection!

Measurements: The necklace measures approximately 32.25" long. The beads graduate in size with the smallest bead measuring 6.25mm in diameter and the largest bead measuring 13mm in diameter.

Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the Jet beads or to the rock quartz crystal spacers. The clasp is secure and in good working condition.
