Best known for their Art Nouveau jewelry and silver, Marcus & Co. is an American jewelry firm started by Herman Marcus and his son in 1892. Their designs were of very high quality craftsmanship and their work is among the best examples of American Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts jewelry.
This Marcus & Co. carnelian fob is a fine example of the legendary makers beautiful craft. From the Art Nouveau (ca1900) period, the piece is made of vibrant 14kt yellow gold and features a beautifully carved double sided spinning carnelian fob at the center. Oval in shape, one side of the carnelian depicts the body of a scarab and the other has the image of a standing woman holding an object. The carnelian hangs from a wonderfully detailed spinner which is riveted into each side. The framework is highly detailed with an ornate raised surface detailed with slithering snakes and textured beadwork. It hangs from a simple gold bail which is stamped "MARCUS & CO.. The fob would look fabulous hanging from a long gold chain and the unusual piece would make any Marcuse & Co. collection complete!
Measurement: The carnelian measures approximately 3/4" wide and 5/8" tall. Overall, the fob hangs a little less than 1 1/2" long, is 1 1/2" wide and has a depth of 1/4".
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold frame or to the carnelian fob.
