Sardonyx is a banded agate form of Chalcedony Quartz. Hard stone cameos are much more difficult to carve than shell which is a significantly softer material. Most shell cameos were carved in Naples, Italy while the hard stone cameos were cut primarily in Idar-Oberstein, Germany.
This lovely 3 piece cameo set includes a pair of hanging earrings and pin from the Victorian period (ca1880). Each sardonyx cameo bears the profile of a Victorian woman and is set in an ornate 14kt gold setting. They rest on a beautiful gold plaque that is trimmed in black enamel tracery and delicate hand engraving. The ornate detail portrayed in the cameo is exceptional. The delicate features in her face, as well as the adornments in her hair are very visible. The earrings hang long from a surmount that is decorated in a complementary black enamel tracery and hand engraved design. The pin setting matches the earrings in the same pattern and plaque. The black enamel tracery is indicative of the mourning period and this set was probably memorial jewelry. A beautiful set, this is a must have for the cameo collector!
Measurements: The earrings hang approximately 1 3/8" long, 5/8" at their widest and 3/8" thick. The individual cameo measures approximately 3/8" wide and 1/2" long. The pin measures a little less than 1 5/8" long, 1 1/4" at the widest point and 1/2" thick. The individual pin cameo measures 3/4" long and 5/8" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of this set is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the gold or to any of the cameos. The earring wires are in good working condition and the clasp on the pin is secure and in good working condition.
