Victorian French 18kt Repousse Citrine Horse & Snake Fob
A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The fob would have been used to seal the wax of a letter or note.
A stunning and unusual figural fob from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Made of vibrant 18kt yellow gold, this incredible French piece has exquisite detail and a visually artistic design. At the base of the fob is a faceted oval citrine, which is foil-backed and bezel set within an incredible repousse setting. A swirled floral motif covers the entire outside surface of the base, adding a lovely feminine touch and the top of the fob has a 3-dimensional figural horse. The horse has a very realistic appearance complete with delicate facial features and textured details to represent its flowing mane and tail. Wrapped several times around the horse's body is a gold snake, whose head rests just above the horse's face, and its tail curling around behind its back hooves. In the middle of the horse's back is a gold loop stamped with 2 French hallmarks and the fob hangs from a complimentary textured gold bail. The detail of the image is simply exceptional and the unusual design displays excellent Victorian craftsmanship. Figural fobs are very unusual and this one is particularly stunning! Both beautiful and unique, this wonderful piece would compliment any jewelry collection and is a must-have for any fob collector!
