Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There is generally two recognized types: soft and hard jet. It is believed that the soft jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of jet. As a result, the jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.

A fabulous jet cross pendant from the Georgian (ca1825) era! This wonderful piece is fairly large in size, and adorns 6 carved jet cabochons, which are set in 9kt yellow gold. Each jet cabochon is square in shape, with the exception of a round one in the center. The reverse side of the piece reveals a closed back rose gold setting and the pendant hangs from a simple gold bail. A very special piece, this pendant would make a wonderful addition to any collection!

Measurement: The cross hangs 2 1/8" long, is 1 3/4" at its widest, and has a depth of approximately 1/4".

Condition: The overall condition of this piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the jet or the gold setting and the bail is intact.
