Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There is generally two recognized types: soft and hard jet. It is believed that the soft jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of jet. As a result, the jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.

A fabulous jet watch chain necklace from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This jet piece has a beautiful and bold look and is a wonderful example of antique jet jewelry. The chain is comprised of two sections that compliment each other perfectly. One side consists of long, flat jet links that alternate with sections of carved jet "o" rings. The other side is comprised of elongated open jet links that are connected by metal jump rings. At the middle of the necklace is a clasp formed by a large, complimentary jet hook that links into one of the metal rings. Hanging in the center of the piece is an unusual carved jet whistle. This fabulous Victorian piece has a bold and versatile look that transitions perfectly into modern day fashion. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection!

Measurements: The necklace measures approximately 24" long. The whistle itself measures 1 1/4" long and is 3/8" at its thickest point. It hangs approximately 3" long below the chain.

Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there are no large chips or scratches in the jet links. The hook clasp fastens securely and the whistle is intact.
