Victorian Sterling & Carved Lava Cameo Necklace
An incredible lava cameo necklace from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This outstanding piece is made of sterling silver and comprised of 5 large cameos, all carved from different colors of lava. Each cameo is bezel set and intricately hand carved to depict an angelic cherub. The raised images have exceptional detail, including feathered wings and delicate facial features. All of the cherubs are pictured with different animals, such as a bird, a lamb or a mythological creature. The lava displays wonderful hues of sage green, beige, taupe, and white, which are unusual and wonderful colors of lava to be used in jewelry. Each cameo is separated by two strands of sterling chain, and the necklace fastens at a large silver push clasp in the back. The necklace is likely of Italian descent and has a rich, distinguished appearance that looks simply magnificent when worn!
Measurements: Each cameo measures approximately 1 1/4" tall, is 1 1/8" wide and 1/4" thick. The necklace measures approximately 15" long.
Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to any of the lava cameos or to the sterling setting. The clasp is secure and in good working condition.
