Victorian Niello Silver & Rose Gold Chain Necklace

SKU: 34157

Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces, and is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is an enamel-like substance made of alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metals.

A wonderful Niello chain from the Victorian (ca1880) era! The chain is comprised of twisted sterling enamel links alternating with complimenting twisted rose gold links, forming a very attractive Cuban link pattern. Each Niello patterned link is engraved and enameled all the way around in a traditional striped black and silver Niello motif. The chain comes together at the center, where it fastens together with a large Niello watch swivel clasp and spring ring. The piece looks fabulous worn alone and the clasps also make it easy to attach a complimentary locket or pendant if desired. A fantastic and unusual piece, it would be perfect for any Niello collector!

Measurements: The chain measures a little more than 15" long, is 3/16" wide and 1/16" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the chain is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver or Niello pattern. The clasps are both secure and in good working condition.
