Sardonyx is a "sard" (or "red") colored banded agate form of Chalcedony Quartz. Hard stone cameos are much more difficult to carve than shell which is a significantly softer material. Most shell cameos were carved in Naples, Italy while the hard stone cameos were cut primarily in Idar-Oberstein, Germany.
An exquisite hard stone sardonyx cameo ring from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This stunning piece is set in 18kt rose gold and has a beautiful carved cameo center. The carved image portrays two figures that appear to be a mother and child, the mother shown with her arm around the child's shoulders while the child's arm reaches up to her waist. The delicately carved detail is exceptional, including folds of fabric draped around each figure that flows towards the ground. The background of the cameo is a rich purplish pink color (traditional of the sardonyx family), which looks fantastic against the rose gold setting. Bordering the cameo are six sparkling Rose Cut diamonds, each held within a square-shaped box setting where the cameo meets the band. The shoulders are engraved with grooves that carry along the sides of the band, adding a wonderful texture. It's an incredibly lovely ring and would look perfect worn everyday or for special occasions!
Measurements: The ring has a finger size 7.5 but could easily be re-sized.
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the cameo and all six diamonds are intact.
