Art Nouveau 14kt Foil Back Amethyst Poison Ring
An absolutely fabulous and unusual amethyst ring from the Art Nouveau (ca1900) era! Simply stunning, this unusual ring is made of 14kt yellow gold and has a cabochon amethyst set in the center. The stone, which is bezel set, is foil backed and has wonderful pinkish purple color. A hidden detail can be found underneath the amethyst which is hinged at the top and flips open. Referred to as a "poison ring", the small compartment could be used to store a small item or photograph. Ornately detailing the shoulders of the ring are 2 angelic winged women which are facing outward. This exceptional piece is very special and would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The amethyst stone, including the gold frame, measures 5/8" tall and a little more than 1/2" wide; when worn, the ring sits 3/8" atop the finger. The ring has a finger size 7 but could easily be re-sized.
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the amethyst, which is intact. The flip top opens easily and stays securely closed.
