Victorian 14kt & Carnelian Family Crest Intaglio Signet Ring
A signet ring can be represented with an intaglio, which is created by carving below the surface of a stone or by a simple smooth seal. Its purpose would have been to seal the wax of a letter or note.
This gorgeous signet ring is absolutely exceptional. From the Victorian (ca1880) period, this lovely ring is made of 14kt yellow gold and holds a large, oval-shaped carnelian with an intaglio carved into the center. The hand carved image portrays a highly detailed family crest, including a shield with three 6-point stars in the middle and a bird perched at the very top. The carnelian stone has a wonderful, rich orange color which compliments the yellow gold setting beautifully. Surrounding the underside of the bezel setting is an attractive scalloped cutout pattern and a triangular cutout at each shoulder of the ring completes the look perfectly. It's a remarkable ring with wonderful artistry and would make a stunning addition to any collection!
Measurements: The carnelian intaglio and gold bezel setting measures 1" tall, 7/8" wide and the ring rests 1/4" atop your finger when worn. The ring is a size 6.5 but could easily be re-sized.
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the carnelian intaglio.
