Art Nouveau French Sterling Gilt Repousse Slide Locket
An extraordinary slide locket from the Art Nouveau (ca1900) era! This lovely piece is made of gilded sterling and has the wonderful repousse image of a beautiful woman's face on each side. The oval-shaped locket is particularly large in size and has a soft, flowing open design. Each side of the locket is comprised of delicate flowers, vines and leaves that rest atop an open sterling frame. Resting in the center is a silver medallion with the raised image of a beautiful woman. The image is intricately detailed with wavy locks of hair, a wide brimmed hat and an angelic face. The medallion is silver and accented with a gold wash that compliments the gilded flowers, creating a gorgeous mixed metals look. The slide style locket opens to reveal a twisted rope frame inside with space to store a special photograph behind glass. The frame is completed with a luxurious red velvet background, which shows through both sides of the locket in the spaces in between the flowers. The piece hangs from a simple sterling bail at the top and would look spectacular worn on a silver chain. This unusual and beautiful locket would make a simply gorgeous addition to any collection!
Measurements: The locket hangs 2 3/8" long, is 1 1/2" at the widest point and is 1/2" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gilded silver setting or sterling bail and the glass frame and velvet background are both intact. The locket slides open easily and closes securely.
