Late Victorian Sterling & 15kt Etched Locket w/ Bird

SKU: 0510

A fabulous mixed metals etched locket from the late Victorian (ca1900) era! The wonderful piece is made of sterling silver and carries an unusual and ornate mixed metals design on the front. Oval in shape, the locket is particularly large in size. In the center of the piece is a raised, sterling silver bird standing on rocks. The bird’s head is turned with its beak open in hope of catching a flying insect. The body of the insect is made of 15kt rose gold, while the wings are made of yellow gold. Behind the bird are highly detailed, etched blades of grass and pussy willows. On the upper right part of the locket is a gorgeous sterling and rose gold floral design which completes the piece perfectly. The locket opens to reveal a glass covered space for your favorite photograph. It hangs from a sterling fluted bail that is stamped with a lion and the inside of the locket is stamped with the initials “RNW”, the letter “D”, and a lion. It is a wonderful example of Victorian artistry and would make a great addition to any collection!

Measurements: The locket hangs approximately 2 1/2" long, is 1 1/2" wide and 1/4" at the thickest point.

Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the silver or gold and the locket closes easily and stays securely closed. There is some normal surface wear to the silver on the back of the locket, which is not unusual for a Victorian piece.
