MARGOT Vintage Sterling & Enamel Fish Necklace Earring Set
Margot van Voorhies Carr, professionally known as Margot de Taxco, was a major contributor to the success of Taxco silver. Margot first came to Mexico in 1937 and soon thereafter met and married Don Antonio Castillo of Los Castillo (another well know Mexican silver jewelry artist). During her time with him, he encouraged her to translate her designs from paper to three-dimensional forms in silver. Many early designs of Los Castillo bear the obvious contributions of Margot de Taxco. After divorcing Antonio, Margot went out on her own with a business card that read, “As the stars are to the Night, So are Jewels to the Woman”. Margot is most famous for her works in enamels on silver and her devotion to Art Deco, Mayan and Japanese-inspired motifs. Her clients at the time included such Hollywood celebrities as John Wayne and Lana Turner and her vintage silver pieces and stunning enamel work have become highly collectable today.
This Vintage necklace and earring set (ca1950's) is a signed piece by Margot de Taxco and a fine example of her amazing talent and creativity! The 2-piece set consists of a fabulous festoon-style necklace and matching clip-on earrings, both pieces made of sterling silver. The necklace is comprised of rectangular green enameled links that connect together and fasten with a complimentary push clasp in the back. Dangling at the center of the necklace is a row of 7 enameled fish, which have brightly enameled bodies in vivid orange, blue and green colors. An engraved textured design rests below all of the colorful enameling, bringing the fish to life. Sterling details depict their scales and their fish tails are formed by 4 pieces that link together, giving them flexible movement. Each earring is portrayed by a matching fish with a sterling clip on the back, allowing them to be worn on pierced or unpierced ears. On the underside a few of the fish links are several markings: the hallmark "MARGOT DE TAXCO" and the circular stamping "STERLING MADE IN MEXICO" which surround the number "16". There are also 4 numbers stamped into the link. This incredibly vibrant and whimsical set makes a fun statement and would be a fabulous addition to any Margot collection!
Measurements: Each fish link and earring measures 1 3/4" long, is 1/4" thick, 5/8" wide at the head and 1 1/8" wide at the tail. The necklace measures approximately 18" long.
Condition: The overall condition of both the earrings and necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the sterling silver setting or enameling. Both the necklace clasp and the earring clips are secure and in good working condition.
