UNGER BROS. Art Nouveau Sterling Repousse Mermaid Match Safe

SKU: 8703

Known for their strong Art Nouveau repousse designs, the Unger Brothers became one of the premier and most well-know American manufacturers of sterling silver jewelry and objects. Born to a family that immigrated from Germany, the Unger Brothers established their business in Newark, NJ and began producing sterling silver jewelry in 1878. They specialized in manufacturing jewelry, glass cutting and silversmithing and in addition to jewelry, produced numerous other items including brushes, hand mirrors, combs, and powder boxes with repoussed silver lids.

This wonderful match safe is a beautiful example of the Unger Brothers art form! From the Art Nouveau (ca1900) period, this sterling silver piece has the beautiful raised image of a mermaid and serpentine sea dragon on the surface. The repousse image is intricately detailed, depicting long flowing locks of hair, delicate facial features, individual serpent scales, and the swirling waves of a stormy sea. Both sides of the piece are crafted with the same beautiful design. The top of the match safe is hinged and opens to reveal a hollow, open compartment inside. The surface of the silver has a wonderful natural patina which adds to the richness and depth to the image. Under the lid on one side of the piece is the stamp "STERLING 925" along with the signature "UB" Unger Brothers hallmark. A beautiful work of art, this match safe has exceptional craftsmanship and would make a special addition to any collection!

Measurements: The match safe measures approximately 2 3/8" tall, is 1 1/2" wide and 5/8" at the thickest point.

Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver and the lid opens easily and stays securely closed.
