Pietra Dura is an art-historical term for the technique of using small, exquisitely cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create what amounts to a painting in stone. The stonework is assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section is practically invisible.
These beautiful Victorian earrings (ca1880) are a great representation of the Pietra Dura art! Most likely of Italian descent, these fabulous earrings are made of 14kt yellow gold and have an ornate twisted wirework and gold leaf frame. Set in the center is an inlaid Pietra Dura design with a blue, green and olive flower motif, which rests within a black stone background. The picture is so fine that it almost looks like a painting! The earrings are attached to an 14kt gold wire and look absolutely stunning on. They would make a lovely addition to any collection!
Measurements: The earrings hang approximately 1 7/8" long, are 3/4" wide and have a depth of 1/8".
Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. All of the stones are intact and besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold.
