The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce an image in relief with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax.
An absolutely gorgeous pair of intaglio earrings from the Victorian (ca1880) era! These beautiful 3 drop earrings are made of 18kt yellow gold and each has three oval shaped links in varying sizes which are hinged together. Each link has a beautiful carnelian intaglio within the center and has an open back. The intaglios feature delicately carved images of animals and mythological figures, and each link bears its own, unique design. The underside of the earrings have a more elaborate gold setting which encases the smooth, uncarved side of the carnelian agate stones. At the top of each earring is an ear wire attached to a small gold filigree ball. The carnelian has a gorgeous orange hue and translucent quality, and its color is complimented perfectly by the beautiful yellow gold. The earrings are simply stunning and would make a fabulous addition to any collection!
Measurements: The earrings hang approximately 2 3/8" long, are approximately 5/8" at their widest, and have a depth of 1/4".
Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or the carnelian intaglios.
