Victorian Hand Carved Faceted Jet Earrings

SKU: MEC34681

Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in many countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There are generally two recognized types: soft and hard Jet. It is believed that the soft Jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of jet. As a result the jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.

Absolutely stunning Jet earrings from the Victorian (ca1880) era! These fabulous earrings are made of hand carved Jet and hang from simple sterling wires. Each begins with a single Jet ring which connects to a "U" shaped link. A large, faceted spear-shaped link hangs from the "U" handle and resting atop and on either side is a curved, Jet horseshoe shape. The earrings have a fabulous and interesting 3-dimensional design which looks striking on. Very light in weight, these gorgeous earrings would make a great addition to any collection!

Measurements: The earrings hang 2 7/8" long and 7/8" wide and deep.

Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear and a couple very small, unnoticeable chips on the back, there is no serious damage to the Jet or to the sterling earring wires, which are secure and in good working condition.
