Gold-in-quartz was formed while the earth was still in its molten state. During the cooling and solidification process, veins of gold became trapped with the crystals of quartz in the mine. This created a very dramatic contrast between the white quartz and the yellow of the gold. Jewelry made from gold quartz became quite a fashion statement of the 1880's. During the Gold Rush era in the American West, most of the gold quartz was mined in California around the San Francisco area.

This beautiful and unusual gold quartz locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era is absolutely fabulous! Made of 14kt rosy yellow gold, the locket is rectangular in shape and has a stunning gold quartz and agate surface on the front and back. The 4 pieces of gold quartz frame the face of the locket, each beautifully rich in color, displaying a range of colors including white, grey, brown, and gold. In the center is a gold outline which has an agate stone plaque set in the middle, resting slightly higher than the gold quartz. The locket is hinged at the top and opens from the bottom, revealing 2 spaces for your favorite photographs. The piece hangs from a simple gold bail. This beautiful piece has a simply wonderful look that is both fashionable and timeless!

Measurements:  The locket hangs 1 5/8" long, is approximately 7/8" wide and 1/4" thick.

Condition:  The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the gold quartz designand the locket opens easily and closes securely.
