Victorian 14kt Carved Hematite Intaglio Horseshoe Locket
A spectacular and unique horseshoe locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Made of 14kt gold, the locket has an wonderfully detailed design on the front, which includes an open wirework pattern and a raised hematite intaglio. The pattern is exquisite, with fine swirled detail depicting a subtle floral motif. Resting inside the horseshoe shape of the gold locket is the hematite intaglio, which has also been hand carved to represent the image of a horseshoe surrounding a horse head. The horse is shown with a bridle and reins and has realistic features including raised ears and a flowing mane. Along the edges of the hematite horseshoe are 7 engraved nails (always 7 for good luck!), finishing the design. The hematite has dark grey color and a high polished finish, which looks striking against the yellow gold setting. At the top of the locket is a square topper with a bail at the top, allowing it to be hung and worn on a chain. The back of the locket has an engine-turned design, adding to the unique appearance of the piece. The locket is hinged at the bottom and opens at the top to reveal space to store one of your favorite photographs behind glass. This incredible locket would be perfect for the equestrian enthusiast and would make a lovely addition to any jewelry collection!
Measurements: The locket hangs 1 3/8" long, is 7/8" at its widest point and approximately 3/8" at its thickest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the gold or hematite. The bail is intact and the piece opens easily and stays securely closed.
