Victorian Sterling & Cut Steel Star Necklace

SKU: MWD0011

Cut Steel is polished steel faceted studs riveted to a steel backing to fashion jewelry, ornaments and buttons. Motifs varied from the simple to the sublime, with multiple layers and densely packed studs. Designs could be enhanced by the use of varying sized studs and each stud could have up to 15 facets. Popular throughout the Georgian and Victorian eras, in general the finer and older the piece, the more facets the studs will have. Made in both England and Europe, this style of jewelry fell out of favor by the turn of the 19th century, but continues to be very collectable with Victorian jewelry collectors!

A wonderful example of cut steel from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This fabulous piece is made of a sterling silver and cut steel and consists a floral link chain with 3 larger star links at the center. The floral links carry around the entire length of the chain and are separated by a single cut steel rivet and at the center are 3, 5-point stars links, the center measuring slightly larger than the outer 2. The stars have a slightly convex face and each are covered in a surface of faceted cut steel studs. All of the cut steel is riveted onto a sterling back and the clasp is incorporated into the design, hidden beneath one of the floral shaped links. This fabulous necklace looks exquisite on and the piece would make a wonderful addition to any collection!

Measurements: The necklace measures 15.5" in length. The smaller stars measure 3/4" tall and wide and the larger center star measures 1 1/4" tall and wide.

Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to any of the steel rivets, sterling backing and clasp is secure and in good working condition.
