Victorian 18kt Gold & Banded Agate Intaglio Ring
The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce an image in relief with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax.
A handsome intaglio ring from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This signet ring has an oval shaped banded agate stone with an intaglio carved into the center. The carved image appears to be a family shield which is bezel set in an 18kt yellow gold mounting. On each side of the intaglio stone is an ornate embossed design on the shoulder of the gold band. The banded agate stone is a creamy blue color and when carved into, it reveals a black layer beneath which makes a lovely and dramatic contrast. On the inside of the ring are 2 markings, "750", and "FM". This fabulous ring would make a beautiful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The intaglio measures a little less than 5/8" wide and 3/4" tall. The ring has a finger size of a generous size 6.5 but could easily be resized.
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is great. There is a hairline fracture across the surface of the intaglio which appears to be a natural occurrence in the stone. This is hardly noticeable when worn. There are also 2 very small and minor chips in the intaglio which is not unusual for a Victorian piece. There is no apparent damage to the gold mounting.
