Victorian Silver Plated Pocket Knife Match Safe

SKU: 36576

$695
An interesting and unusual match safe from the Victorian (ca1880) period! This unique piece is silver plated and carries the shape of a realistic pocket knife with a fabulous repousse design. Both sides of the match safe display a textured surface with repousse veins that resemble rugged tree bark. On one side of the piece are two slivers that represent knife blades, giving the look of a real pocket knife, though the blades are purely decorative and remain sealed in place. The top of the match safe is hinged and opens to reveal a hollow, open compartment inside where matches were once stored to keep them safe and dry. On the top of the lid is a ridged surface that acts a striker, allowing the owner to easily start a flame. The plated silver surface has a wonderful natural patina which adds to the richness and depth to the image. An creative and handy piece of art, this wonderful match safe is as visually appealing as it is useful, and would make a great addition to any collection!

Measurements: The match safe measures approximately 2 3/4" tall, is 1 1/8" across at its widest point, and 5/8" at the thickest point.

Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the plated silver setting and the lid opens easily and stays securely closed.
