Vienna bronze, also known as Austrian bronze or Viennese bronze, is a special art form that dates back to the mid Victorian era. The earliest foundries were formed in 1850 and produced thousands of individually cast bronze miniatures, sculptures and figurines. Viennese bronzes gained recognition for their incredibly lifelike depictions of humans and animals of all species, measuring only millimeters in size. Many pieces were finished with beautiful patinas and hand-painted detail to bring the creations to life. Over 20 to 30 thousand different original designs are capable of being produced by the foundries, reflecting popular European taste throughout the eras. Antique and Victorian era Vienna bronze pieces have now become very collectible!

This wonderful miniature figurine from the Victorian era (ca1890) is an excellent example of the traditional Vienna bronze art form! Cast entirely in bronze, this small, three-dimensional sculpture depicts an incredibly lifelike pheasant. The bird is freestanding on small individual legs with taloned feet, and it stands with its tail feathers stretched out behind its body and its head cocked to one side. Textured detail on the surface of the piece represents downy feathers on its chest and wings, and carefully hand painted eyes complete its facial features. A beautiful golden patina enriches the surface and adds further depth to the design. A very special piece, it displays exemplary craftsmanship and would make a perfect addition to any collection!

Measurements: The bird figurine stands 7/8" tall, measures 1 3/8" long, and is 3/8" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the figurine is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the Vienna bronze setting.
