Victorian Oversized Open Door Locket w/ Painted Portrait
A fabulous oversized locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This unique piece is very substantial in size, and has a simple yet unusual design crafted in german silver. The face of the oval-shaped locket is smooth with a vertical seam running down the center and a hinge at either side. Resting at the center is a raised silver ball which serves as a "doorknob", opening the front of the locket as though it were a wardrobe. When opened, the inside reveals a painting of a young woman and child held behind glass, where a favorite picture or photograph could be stored. The locket hangs from a large sterling bail perfect for hanging from a long Victorian chain. A bold and eye-catching sterling piece, it makes a fabulous statement when worn!
Measurements: The locket hangs approximately 3 3/8" long, is 2 1/8" wide and 1/2" thick. The overall weight of the piece is approximately 66.2 grams.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the locket. The locket opens easily and stays securely closed, and the bail is in good working condition.
