Art Deco 22kt St. Gaudens Gold Coin Travel Watch/Pendant

SKU: 31037

Considered by many to be the most beautiful U.S. coin, the St. Gaudens $20 gold coin was named after its designer, the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Minted from 1907 to 1933, it is one of America's most recognized old coins.

This particular St. Gaudens $20 gold coin was minted in 1927. It has been beautifully hand crafted and transformed from a single $20 gold coin into a pocket and travel watch. When closed, it simply looks like a double eagle coin that hangs from a bail, however, opening the face reveals the gold watch which has been built within the coin encasement. Made of brilliant 22kt yellow gold, the front of the coin depicts the striking image of Liberty holding a torch and an olive branch. Rays of the sun back the woman and the U.S. capitol can be seen in the background. A fine border of stars frames the front of the coin and the date 1927 can be seen at the bottom. The other side of the coin portrays an in flight eagle which is also backed in rays from the sun. The outer edge of the coin has the phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM". The images on each side have an embossed, raised appearance which is highly detailed. The thin front face opens at a hidden push button on the side of the coin. Once opened, you see a simple 18kt gold watch that is set in the center. The watch can be lifted so that it stands upright and used as a travel watch and set on a desk or a table. The inside of the gold coin encasement is stamped "FAVRE-LEUBA SWISS". The back of the gold watch is stamped "18K 0750 122" and "710027 59". The watch is fully functional but must be wound on a regular basis. It's an absolutely exquisite, hand crafted piece that is very unusual. It would make a fantastic addition to any coin or watch collection.

Measurement: When closed, the diameter of the coin watch is 1 3/8" with a thickness of 1/8". Hanging as a pendant or pocket watch, the watch hangs 1 5/8" long. When opened and the clock standing upright, the watch is approximately 1 3/8" tall.

Condition: The overall condition of the watch is excellent. Besides normal surface wear to the gold, there is no serious damage to the gold coin watch. The face opens easily and stays securely closed and the watch stands up easily. Watches of this era should be cleaned and oiled periodically and at this time, the watch is in fine working order and keeping good time.
