Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal.

This gorgeous bracelet is from the Victorian (ca1880s) era and an excellent example of the Niello art form! Crafted in .900 silver, this fabulous Austro-Hungarian bangle is embellished with a fine checkerboard Niello pattern that is inlaid onto the entire outer surface. The delicate silver squares come alive against the soft black enamel-like substance, which creates the rich background. The hinged bracelet fastens with a lovely etched push clasp on the side, and stamped on the tongue is the Austro-Hungarian Diana head domestic silver hallmark featuring a "2" and an "A," indicating it's .900 silver purity, and that it was assayed between 1872-1922 in the city of Vienna. Stamped nearby is a "M&S" maker's mark, and stamped on the inside of the bangle is the same maker's mark besides a "1." This stylish bangle would look fabulous worn alone or stacked with other bracelets, blending perfectly into modern day fashion. A wonderful Victorian Niello piece, it makes a perfect everyday accessory and would compliment any collection!

Measurements: The inside of the bracelet (where a wrist would rest) measures 2 1/4" wide and 1 3/4" tall. The surface of the bracelet is approximately 1/4" wide.

Condition: The overall condition of the bracelet is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the .900 silver setting or to the Niello pattern. There is a very light patina on some of the silver squares, which is normal given the age of the piece. The bracelet clasp fastens securely and is in good working condition.
