Victorian Carved Tortoise Shell Chain & Locket Necklace
A fantastic tortoise shell locket necklace from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Now a banned material, antique tortoise shell jewelry has become very collectible. This unusual piece features a tortoise shell locket that hangs from a chain necklace made of carved tortoise shell links. The rich tortoise shell varies in color with wonderful deep brown, amber and caramel hues. At the center of the chain is a large tortoise shell ring where the chain and locket meet. The locket is accented by an intricate raised design on the front surface, which depicts an overlapping set of initials that have been textured with hand carved detail. The locket is hinged and opens to reveal spaces to store two special photographs inside. The necklace hooks together at a carved clasp in the back and a gold safety chain provides extra security. A remarkably bold and attractive statement piece, it would make a fabulous addition to any collection!
Measurements: The tortoise shell link chain measures 28" long from end to end. The locket hangs 2 3/8" long, is 1 1/4" wide and 1/2" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket and chain is excellent. Aside from normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the tortoise shell locket or to the link chain. The locket opens easily and fastens securely. The clasp and safety chain and both secure and in good working condition.
