Victorian Sterling Gilt Bohemian Garnet Encrusted Locket

SKU: 36586

Bohemian garnet jewelry dates back to the 19th century. During this time, garnets were one of the most popular types of stones used in jewelry production. The garnets were often placed close together in an effort to produce a more pronounced color and brightness than when they were set singularly. Most often, bohemian garnet jewelry was set in a closed back setting made of rose gold gilt over silver; this method is sometimes referred to as 'garnet gold'.

An absolutely gorgeous and unusual Bohemian garnet locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Made of sterling silver, both sides of this beautiful locket are completely encrusted with faceted garnet stones. The locket is medium sized and oval in shape and has a lovely flower motif in the center formed by raised garnet stones to depict petals. The vibrant garnets vary in size and are all beautifully faceted, displaying lush hues of deep reds which look fiery when they catch the light. The locket is hinged on the side and opens to reveal space to store a special photograph behind glass. The inside of the piece reveals a subtle rose gold wash, known as the traditional "garnet gold" gilt setting. The piece hangs from a simple bail and would hang nicely from a delicate gold or sterling chain. A real beauty, this stunning locket has a sweet and feminine look, and would be perfect for the lover of garnets!

Measurements: The locket hangs 1 1/4" long, is 7/8" wide and 1/2" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver setting or to the bohemian garnet stones, all of which are intact. The locket opens easily and stays closed securely, as does the glass frame inside. The bail is secure and in good working condition.
