Victorian Silver Gilt Amethyst + Garnet Bug Pin
A beautiful bug pin from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This charming piece is crafted in silver gilt, and depicts an open winged fly. Faceted amethyst stones form the insect's body, while two red gems represent its eyes. The outstretched wings are dotted with fine beadwork, and accented with delicate seed pearls. Two wire antennae sprout from the top of the head, and six bent legs peak out from sides of the body. Completing the design is a bar pin and c-catch clasp underneath, perfect for fastening the piece to a favorite garment. A wonderful example of Victorian gemstone insect jewelry, this colorful brooch would make a special addition to any antique collection!
Measurements: The pin measures 1 1/4" long. The gemstone bug is 3/4" tall, and wide (from wing to wing).
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver gilt setting. All of the stones and pearls are intact. The pin clasp fastens securely and is in good working condition. There is a natural patina on the surface of the setting, which gives a darkened antique appearance to the piece, and is a common characteristic of antique jewelry.
