Victorian Amethyst & Diamond Enameled Festoon Necklace
An elaborate amethyst necklace from the Victorian period (ca1880)! This magnificent piece is crafted in 14kt yellow gold, and has a very decorative festoon design. There are 8 amethyst beads interspersed throughout the piece, each with a multi-faceted surface and gorgeous natural purple hue. Wrapped around the necklace are strands of fine woven chain, which dangle gold spears from the base. Each spear head has a black enamel border and is lined with delicate rose cut diamonds, adding a lovely sparkle! At the back of the piece is a strand of chain that fastens with a simple gold spring ring clasp. A spectacular example of fine Victorian era jewelry, this outstanding necklace drapes beautifully at the neckline and has quite a spectacular, dramatic effect when worn. It is a perfect statement piece for special occasions, and would make a magnificent addition to any collection!
Measurements: The necklace measures about 18.5" long from end to end. The center festoon strand drapes approximately 2 1/4" long in the middle. The largest amethyst bead measures 17mm in size, and the smallest measures 8mm. The gold spears measure between 1/2" to 3/4" in length.
Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is good, with some signs of normal surface wear commensurate with age. All of the amethyst beads are intact and are free of any noticeable chips or scratches. All of the rose cut diamonds are intact. There is some surface wear visible to the black enamel, which is missing small sections on a few of the gold spears. However, the surface wear is does not detract from the magnificent design, and is not particularly noticeable when worn. The gold setting shows a few areas of light wear and solder upon close inspection, but remains in good condition. The spring ring clasp fastens securely and is in good working condition.
