Victorian 9kt Carnelian Intaglio Fob Pendant
A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce and image in relief with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax, often used in signet rings and fobs.
A lovely carnelian fob pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in 9kt rose gold, this piece displays a wonderful 3-dimensional design. A wide, u-shaped handle connects the bail to the base, which has the shape of a domed platform, topped with a delicate bead. A beautiful ribbed texture decorates the top of the platform and borders the perimeter, and resting at the base is a carnelian seal, which exhibits a rich, burnt sienna color. Carved into the surface is a set of initials,"ML," written in a beautiful script, with a sweet bow tie below and an octagonal shaped border finishing the intaglio design. An additional bead embellishes the top of a wide bail, which is perfect for hanging from a favorite chain or charm bracelet. A classic and gorgeous intaglio fob pendant, this piece would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 1" long (including the bail at the top), and measures about 3/4" wide, and is 5/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the fob pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the rose gold setting or to the carnelian seal, which is intact and free of chips or scratches. The bail for is secure and in good working order.
