The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving into the surface of a stone to produce an image in relief, with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax. A signet ring can be represented with an intaglio, or with a simple smooth seal. Its purpose would have been to sign and seal the wax of a letter or note.

A stunning and unusual intaglio signet ring from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This French made piece is crafted in 18kt yellow gold, and adorns a stunning citrine stone at the center of an ornate band. The golden yellow stone is bezel set and beautifully faceted, catching the light brilliantly with every turn in its open back setting. The surface of the citrine features a carved image of a muscular arm grasping a large sword above a looped belt, complete with buckle details and notches. Carved inside of the belt are the initials "E D" written in a gorgeous script, and inscribed along the belt is the Latin phrase "TENAX PROPOSITI" which translates to "firm of purpose." Completing the stylish design are wide, split shank shoulders featuring a grooved surface that graduates towards the back, and stamped along the outside of the band is a French hallmark of an eagle head, indicating its gold purity. A fabulous and incredible piece with a delightful message, this remarkable ring would make a wonderful addition to any collection!

Measurements: The ring has a finger size of 10.25, but can be resized. The centerpiece measures about 5/8" wide and 3/4" tall, and rests about 1/4" above the finger when worn. The gold band measures 3mm wide at the back.

Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting. The citrine is intact and securely set.
