Victorian Sterling Watch Chain + Carnelian Intaglio and Figural Horse Fob Necklace 15.5"
A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket.
A stunning equestrian-themed fob pendant necklace from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! This gorgeous sterling silver compilation piece features two beautiful fobs that hang at the center of a curb link chain necklace. One of the fobs depicts a double-sided horseshoe motif adorned with raised nail studs, and a smoothly polished carnelian seal at the base. The stone is held within a decorative carved bezel setting, and exhibits a rich, brownish red hue. The other fob is a wonderfully detailed figural horse head fob with a lovely 3-dimensional appeal. Both pendants dangle from a short extension chain with a toggle bar hanging near the top, where it meets the curb link chain necklace that fastens in the back with two swivel watch clasps. The necklace features numerous English hallmarks, including several lions throughout the chain, and stamped on the horseshoe fob, is an anchor, indicating it was assayed in Birmingham, and the date letter, "o," dating it to 1888, next to the maker's mark "J.C." This unique Victorian compilation piece is simply exceptional, and would make a perfect addition to any equestrian enthusiast's collection!
Measurements: The necklace measures approximately 15.5" in total length. The extension chain hangs about 1 1/2" long, and the horseshoe fob hangs about 1 1/4" long, measures 3/4" wide, and 1/2" thick. The horse head fob measures approximately 1" tall, 1" wide, and is 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting. The carnelian is intact and securely set and the watch swivel clasps fasten securely and are in good working order. There are some slight indentations on the horseshoe fob, which is not noticeable when worn. There is a natural patina on the surface of some of the silver, which is normal given the age of the piece and adds to its beauty and character.
