Victorian Large 14kt Carved Onyx + Diamond Floral Mourning Locket/Pendant
An absolutely magnificent onyx mourning locket from the Early Victorian (ca1846) era! This gorgeous piece is particularly large in size, and hand carved into the shape of an oval adorned with a sparkling diamond design riveted to the center. The 3-dimensional design forms the shape of a blooming bouquet of flowers, with each petal and leaf accented by an old Rose Cut diamond. Most of the gorgeous stones are bead set, while the two largest diamonds rest in a raised-prong buttercup style setting, creating a fabulous sparkling array in the light. The locket hangs from a wirework fluted bail which is decorated with a complimentary diamond encrusted leaf design. The back of the locket reveals a large removable glass covered space, with a gold bezel that is engraved with an endearing mourning tribute "ELIZABETH TYRWHITT NEE LIPYEATT" and "MORTE EN 1846." Currently, the space features coiled hair, a common mourning jewelry practice, however it can be removed to add a treasured keepsake or photograph, if desired. This incredible early Victorian piece would look fabulous worn from a favorite chain and would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The locket hangs approximately 2 1/2" long (including the bail) and measures a little less than 1 1/2" wide and is 3/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant/locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting, onyx or diamonds, all of which are secure and intact. The bail and removable glass frame are secure and in good working order. Due to the hand cut nature of old Rose Cut diamonds, the shape of the stones do not have perfect symmetry.
