Victorian 18kt Garnet Intaglio Ring

SKU: 38366

$1,295
The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface of a stone. Often found in signet jewelry such as rings and fobs, its purpose would have been to seal the wax of a letter or note.

This beautiful intaglio ring from the Victorian era (ca1880) is simply wonderful! The ring is made of 14kt rose gold and holds a garnet stone at the center, with an intaglio image carved into the surface. The hand carved image depicts the profile of a woman's face, with detailed imagery that includes flowing hair, a floral headpiece, and individual facial features. The garnet stone itself has a rich, deep berry color and is grasped within a split four-prong setting. Completing the design is a smooth, wide band. This artistic Victorian era piece looks gorgeous in person and would make a special addition to any collection!

Measurements: The ring has a finger size 7.25 but could be resized up or down if desired. The garnet centerpiece measures approximately 3/4" tall, 1/2" wide, and 5/16" high.

Condition: The ring remains in very good antique condition. There is some normal surface wear to the piece that is commensurate with age. The garnet stone is intact and secure within its setting. Some natural inclusions are visible inside the stone, and the surface wear includes a few shallow chips near the prongs and on the back. The scratches are very minor and not noticeable when worn. Some light color variation is present throughout the gold setting, which is also subtle and not noticeable when worn.
