William Spratling is often referred to as the "Father of Contemporary Mexican Silver" which is a title that was well deserved. He was an innovative and talented designer of Mexican silver jewelry and other pieces of artwork made of copper and tin. He dedicated his time and skill to the artistic development and growth of the silver industry in Taxco. Spratling jewelry is extremely collectable and each piece is considered a wonderful work of art.

This incredible and rare Vintage necklace from 1950s is a fantastic example of William Spratling's remarkable talent! This gorgeous sterling silver piece adorns a large croissant shaped pendant at the center of a bold link chain, and is referred to as the "Collar Gola" or "Ruff Croissant" necklace. The 3-dimensional pendant displays wide twisted folds, similar to that of the real buttery roll, which are inlaid with vibrant pieces of tortoise shell across the front. The shell plaques display wonderful shades of deep brown and caramel colors that contrast beautifully with the silver veins that line each section and wrap around the underside. The chain is comprised of smoothly polished elongated links that are separated by round connector rings, and fastens in the back with a hook and loop clasp, creating a wonderful compliment to the pendant. Stamped on the back of the pendant is Spratling's signature hallmark beside a "925" sterling purity mark. This necklace style is featured on page 84 of the book "William Spratling and the Mexican Silver Renaissance" by Maestros de Plata. A fantastic and revered example of his work that would make a fabulous statement piece when worn, this necklace would make any Spratling collection complete!

Measurements: The necklace measures approximately 17" in total length. The large pendant measures approximately 4 1/4" wide, 1 1/4" long, and a little more than 1/4" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver setting or tortoise plaques. The hook and loop closure are secure and in good working condition. There is a natural darkened patina on the silver, which is normal for a vintage piece and adds to its unique character and beauty, however it can be polished, if desired.
