Art Deco 14kt Enameled Boulder Opal + Seed Pearl Pendant
Boulder opals are the rarest of all natural opal varieties, comprising only 2% of Australia's total opal population. In terms of value, they are considered second only to the popular Black Opal. The name "Boulder Opal" originates from their natural formation, where they are embedded into large ironstone boulders, often retaining part of their ironstone matrix when mined. Their unique appearance includes vibrant flashes of color enhanced by the ironstone matrix, which often appears as a black, brown, or grey base below the iridescent hues. Historically, opals were believed to bring good luck when given as a gift. In the modern day, they continue to be adored worldwide and are one of the most desirable stones used in fine jewelry!
An unique and gorgeous large boulder opal pendant from the Art Deco (ca1920) era! Originally an antique pin, the piece has been transformed into a stylish pendant, making it a wonderful conversion piece! Crafted in 14kt yellow and white gold, the pendant features a large oval-shaped cabochon boulder opal held within a gold bezel and framed by a natural seed pearl border which is strung on fine wire. Accenting the four north, south, east, and west corners are black, orange and green enameled accents which compliment the beautiful Deco design perfectly. The opal is smoothly polished into a dome-shaped cabochon and is quite unique, displaying an array of iridescent colors that are contained within a rich brown iron matrix base. The iridescent properties appear as swirls of shimmery color within the surrounding deep brown matrix, creating quite an eye-catching contrast. The back and sides of the pendant are crafted in 14kt white gold and a lovely wirework pattern runs along the entire length of the sides. The opals' open-backed setting along with a hidden double bail can be found on the back of the fantastic pendant. It's a bold, statement piece which looks fabulous on and would make a perfect addition to any collection!
