Reverse carved crystal was a technique created by cutting pieces of rock quartz crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then hand-painted. From the front, the image appears to be almost three-dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were some of the most common motifs.

This reverse carved crystal pendant from the Victorian (ca1880s) era is a wonderful example of the craft! Crafted in 14kt yellow gold, this wonderful piece features a carved rock crystal cabochon which rests atop a shimmery mother of pearl background. The carefully hand-painted image is incredibly detailed, portraying a sailboat in motion, its textured white sails billowing in the wind as it cruises atop a choppy blue-green sea. The carved crystal is bezel set and a simple gold jump ring is attached to the top, perfect for hanging from a favorite chain or charm bracelet. That back is marked with a "14K" gold purity mark. A very unique and artistic piece, it is perfect for any collector of reverse carved Essex crystal!

Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 3/4" long (including the bail), and measures 9/16" in diameter and nearly 1/4" in depth.

Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the reverse carved crystal. The bail is secure and in good condition.
