Art Deco Sterling + Vauxhall Glass Festoon Style Riviera Necklace
Vauxhall glass (also known as "mirror glass") refers to a specific style of colored glass production originating in the Georgian era. The molded glass was backed in silver to create a reflective "mirror" below the surface, which creates a unique light-catching quality. The colors often included deep, rich shades of red, purple, white, and black (sometimes mistaken for jet), and were generally mounted in brass. To this day, antique Vauxhall glass jewelry remains popular with collectors!
A fabulous Vauxhall festoon-style Riviera necklace from the Art Deco (ca1920s) era! This wonderful piece is crafted in sterling silver and displays 57 molded Rose Cut glass gems. The graduated Vauxhall glass stones rest in mirrored scissor-edge bezels that display a pattern of concentric circles on their backs, each attached by hidden links. The necklace combines the best of the classic Riviera style and the drama of a festoon with its second layer of stones, further enhanced with foliate accents as teardrop-shaped stones dangle below. A discrete push clasp hides at the back of the seamless necklace, and the link next to the concealing clasp reads "STERLING". This necklace's internal glow is hard to capture in photos, however, it looks particularly beautiful when worn, and would be a phenomenal addition to any collection!
Measurements: The necklace measures approximately 15" long. The central drop design hangs about 2 1/2" inches tall. The round Vauxhall stones range in diameter from about 3/8" at their smallest to 13/16" at their largest. The teardrop-shaped glass drops differ in size, the larger being nearly 7/16" tall and the smaller being about 3/8" tall. The foliate accents measure nearly 11/16" tall and are slightly less than 1/4" wide.
Condition: The necklace is in overall excellent antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting. One small accent stone is missing in the leftmost foliate accent, but this is not visible when worn and does not detract from the riviera's beauty. There are minuscule dimples in some of the glass stones, but this is not visible when worn nor does it negatively impact their integrity. The stones are all securely set within their bezels.
