The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce an image in relief, with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax.

An incredible bloodstone intaglio ring from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in 14kt yellow gold, this fabulous piece adorns an oval-shaped bloodstone that is bezel set at the center. The stone displays a hand-carved image of a mythical sea creature above an ancient and common motto. The detailed image is incredible, showcasing delicate scales, an arched dorsal fin, and a beautiful 3-pointed tail. The Latin phrase "DUM SPIRO SPERO" (which translates to "While I breathe, I hope") is carved along a curved banner at the base of the stone. The polished bloodstone displays a deep forest green color and is marbled with natural, bright orange flecks. Finishing the design is a smooth gold mounting and tapered band, which is stamped with a maker's mark inside. This stunning ring has a lovely meaning, and would make a fabulous addition to any Victorian collection!

Measurements: The ring has a finger size of 7, but could easily be re-sized. The bloodstone centerpiece measures a little more than 1/2" tall, slightly less than 1/2" wide, and rests a little more than 1/8" above the finger when worn. The tapered gold band measures 2.5mm wide at the back.

Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold mounting. The carved bloodstone is intact and securely set.
